Post by: Howard Robbins #13558 on October 12, 2006, 04:42:52 PM
Hi,
I have a 1956 Cadillac 60S which has been sitting for about a year. Started up and no problems when first driving. Now It will only go forward in first gear and in reverse.Just wont go through the shifting phases.Checked and drained, refilled with new transmission fluid. Need advise Wife wants to drive it to school this Halloween. Thanks, Howard

Howard,

You might try the following.

The 56 Shop Manual shows on page 12-69, note (11) Disassembly, Cleaning, Inspection and Assembly of Individual Units.

Figure 12-84. This regulator is on the Drivers side of the car, front on transmission.

Pull it out, if it is stuck and hard to get out this might be the problem, clean it with emmory cloth, then re-install.

Good Luck

You might also want to check the governor. Its on tghe rear of the transmission case, and I seem to remember that it can be removed with the transmission in the car. If the valves in the governor are stuck, no shifts.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for your reply. If Johns suggestion doesnt work, I try the governor.
