Title: Correct parts for 38 Series 65?
Post by: Bill Gauch #23121 on March 29, 2007, 06:58:26 AM
What is the correct carburetor for my 1938 Cadillac Series 65. There is a Carter 595 S on it now, but Im pretty sure that is a 46-47 part.

Also, what is the correct fuel pump? I dont know what P/N is on it. Where do I look for a part number on these? The one on the car has the bowl off the side, which I dont think is correct.

Im pretty sure I have spares in my grandfathers parts/tools box, but I have no idea if they are the originals or just spare replacements.

the correct carburetor is probably the same one as was on  my 38-60S originally. I seem to remember that it was a Strombverg AAV-25. the automatic choke has an electrical heater, which is usually burned out. If the carb on your car now, has no hand throttle lever on it, it will be a 42 or later.

The original pump on the same 38-60S had the fuel filter bowl off to the side of the fuel section of the pump. If you want to, the 575 pump is the replacement. It has the regular top glass filter bowl on it. Some models of the 575 have a metal filter bowl.

Bill,

Old Doug is correct, the Stromberg AAV-25, 205-2, is the correct carburetor for the 38 Cadillac. The V-16 and LaSalle were using Carter Carburetors in this year.

The AAV-25 was produced for only one year, so is unique. The electric choke was also produced in 37, but 38 was the last year. The outlet on the carburetor for the accelator is also unique, as it has tubes going into the carburetor bore.

If yours has been changed to a Carter, did they change the exhaust manifold for the heat tube going to the Carter Carburetor for the choke?

Also, the Voltage Regulator was originally a 5 post type, which you hardly ever see. Most have been coverted to 3 post (positive ground).

Thanks Doug and John.

As for the tube, it looks, in my pictures, like it goes somewhere. I cant see the other end though. I will have to check when I get home. I am going to say that my grandfather would have made it correct as far as functionality. I have seen the Carter 595s listed for 46-47, so Im betting he got the whole package needed to convert to the different carb. He was an engineer/tinkerer and a cheap-living yankee. He would find a way to make anything do what he wanted it to do.

Bill,

That is the way life is supposed to be lived. The original was less than perfect and many, many folks coverted to the later model carburetors (both Stromberg and Carter)...

Hope you keep the car in the family for years to come. I enjoyed your last post greatly.
