I am in need of a little help.  We are trying to get a 1927 Cadillac with the 314 V8 up and running.  We installed a new distributor and had the carb rebuilt.  It actually started today for the first time in over 30 years.  The problem is it will only run if we hold the choke closed by pulling the cable all the way in.  If you even begin to let it go it stalls instantly.  After running this way for a little while it eventually starts to smoke and it smells very rich.  Why will it only run with the choke pulled?  Any ideas would be helpful.  Thanks

Is that the Johnson carb?  The symptoms indicate that it is too lean to start, but when you pull the choke it is too rich to run after warm. They are at two opposite ends of the spectrum, so I would think that there is something wrong with the carb itself. You should be able to slowly push the choke back to adjust the mixture.
