The switch for the convertible top is acting erratically. Is the problem usually the switch?, or should I look somewhere else? Can a switch from a later model GM be "retrofitted".Can switches (power window, etc.) be repaired, or must they be replaced? Thanks in advance.

John,

You'd be better off with an earlier switch that can be disassembled and serviced. The '66 switch is crimped together and nearly impossible to open. Just check the dimensions to be certain it fits, or can be made to fit,  the dash opening properly.

Try Cadillac Tim. I purchased a reconditioned switch from him, works great, good price. He'll take your old core also.

When you say the switch is acting erractically, does the motor quit running, or does the top just stop moving?  If the motor is still running then the switch is working.  If the motor stops then it is likely in the switch.  I have rebuilt switches if you need one.

To answer your other question, yes many of the GM window switches will work for a convertible top.  They all use the three prong connector, and can handle the current.  As Ralph said, check the diminsions, some are square shaped, and others are rectangular shaped.
