I can see a canister near the front crankshaft pulley that the fuel line from the carb goes into. Is this a replaceable fuel filter ?

Based on your question I would suggest a shop manual to familiarize yourself with this car, and no that is the fuel vapor cannister for the emissions system.  There is a filter in the tank and also in the inlet of the carb. There may be an inline filter as some were added aftermarket.

On a 73 if its all original the filter is in the bottom of the fuel pump.   The fuel pump hangs off the front left side of the engine just above the crank area.   The filter is under a big nut that the steel fuel line going to the carb also threads into.  If the car has ever been exposed to salt this can be quite a bear to get apart.  The steel nut on the steel line often rusts in.

Post does not say what year or model of Cadillac.  Agree with TJ Hopland, likely the canister by the crank pulley with a fuel line to carb, where fuel line connects to canister (the fuel pump) is location of fuel filter if it is 70 ( I own 1970 Cadillacs) thru I guess 74 or maybe 76.  Buy a shop manual on e-bay, they are not expensive and worth their weight in gold.  Start your post subjects with year, make and model, such as "1973 Cadillac Eldorado fuel filter", that way people brousing thru posts can quickly decide if they can help you.

I agree its nice when people put details in their subject.  This board is getting better about that but still seems like at least haft the subjects are what would be considered a 'teaser' topic.  That is any topic you pretty much have to click on to see what its actually about.

I was guessing a 73 because he is a fairly new poster and has been asking questions about a 73.   IF I had not been answering several of them recently I would not have had any idea what the car was either.

Another thing you can do especially when you have only one car is put it in your signature line so it appears at the bottom of every post.

Thanks for the help on the fuel filter for my 1973 Eldorado.
My fault for not posting the year.
I have ordered a workshop manual from ebay and I am waiting for its arrival by snail mail.
I do have a picture posted near my avatar and I will check to see how to change my profile.

You can just add your car info where you put the 'two crabs' note.

You did get the actual GM manual?   That has a silver cover with blue outline and lettering.  Hopefully that is what you got because they are by far the best.  You will like the shop manual.  Back then they were pretty specific and even the different models were pretty similar so its not too confusing.   Later things started getting less detailed and more confusing because of the larger differences in models and number of options.

The other manual you may want at some point is the 73 Fisher body manual.   Its orange cover with black writing.  That has a lot more detail in the body and some of the interior than the regular manual.  It covers all GM models but still has some good info.   It also has info on the top which is barely mentioned in the regular manual.

Just doing a quick look online its kinda nice to see that overall manual prices are pretty reasonable.   There is still the odd example where someone thinks they can get $80 for a well used one.  I could see $80 for a near mint one if you just wanted something pretty to sit on the shelf or as part of a show display for a show car but that's an insane price for a typical used copy especially when at any given time you can find them on the same site for closer to $20.   Seems like 10 years ago average price was maybe $40.   Must be more on the market now and fewer cars / buyers.    I have 2 copies for the cars I own.   One is the decent one that just sits on the shelf.  The other is the one that is now missing pages at the front and back and is full of notes and greasy fingerprints.
