I'm looking for some information or a template for installing/reinstalling the fender spears.  The previous owner of the car removed the fender spears and filled the associated mounting holes in the fenders.  I have a found a set of spears, and now need guidance on locating exactly where they should be positioned/installed on each fender.  Any help with this would be much appreciated! Grant,

I believe the filled holes for the fender spears will be easily seen from the back side of the fenders. You may have to remove  the fenders to perform the repairs, but most likely to find exactly where these need to be mounted.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Terry.  As luck would have it, the previous owner left no sign/clue as to where the holes were originally located - great workmanship on his part. Grant

Grant: I think about the only way to get an idea of where the moldings goes on your 41 fender is to get a picture of a fender with the moldings attaches and then show some measurements. I have a friend about 4 houses from me with a 41-62 sedan. I could take some pictures, get some measurements for you, if you want. Do you need both front and rear fenders? Does you car have skirts?   Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply. I'd really appreciate you doing that for me!  I would need information for both front and rear fenders.  The car does not have fender skirts. Grant

Grant: I hope to get back to you today with some pictures and measurements.    Bill

Not a problem, Bill - take all the time you want!  I'm just grateful for the information as I have no examples of the car in my area (that I'm aware of, anyway).  Grant

Hi Grant: Lets talk rear fender first. The first thing I would find is the placement of the front tip of the bottom molding. You will notice the bottom of the rear fender slopes from rear to front. I would use a square and slowly come foreword on the bottom of the fender and stop at 5 3/8 inch and make a mark 5 3/8 inches from the bottom of the fender. Use the same square and slowly from the bottom of the wheel opening, come up the wheel opening until you read 8 1/2 inches. Make a mark at 8 1/2 inches and hopefully it will cross close to the other mark. This then should give you the front point for the lower molding. Then the middle and top moldings are 1 1/2 inches apart which is from the edge of one molding to the other. It is also important that you lay a small level on the bottom edge of the bottom molding to make sure that the bottom molding is level and then you should read about 4 1/2 inches from the bottom of the fender to the lower edge of the bottom molding.
Realize that these measurements are approximate and you might find you need to move the bottom molding slightly to get the bottom molding to be level. Then you will need to figure a way to mark your drill points for that lower molding.  Before I start on the front fender molding, please let me know if I make sense so far or do I need a couple more beers.  Bill

Hi Bill,

Your description makes perfect sense - but I'd have another couple of beers anyway!  Look forward to seeing what you come up with for the front fender. Cheers, Grant

Grant: For my second masterpiece I present the front fender. From the picture you will notice the bottom of the front fender sloops slightly down from the back bottom 7 7/8 to 8 1/4 from the front bottom. I think in this case I would find the center of the bottom of the fender , measure up 8 1/4 and mark for the bottom edge of the lower molding. Use a level and draw a level line which would represent the bottom edge of that molding. Then position that lower molding so that the nose of that lower molding is 1 inch from the opening of the fender well. Again ,as in the rear fender moldings, they are 1&1/2 inches between moldings measured edge to edge.

You might find the use of small magnet about the size of a dime and move it around on the inside of the fender where you think you might find the original holes, probably filled in with bondo. Bill

Thanks Bill! Thanks again for the great info. & pics!  No bondo in this beauty I'm afraid - all the holes for the fender spears were welded closed.  You'd never know the spears were ever there.  My next project is to have the fender spears chromed, buy some new cup washers (?), and then I'll install back onto the car.
