Do I have to remove the gas tank to change the unit or can it be done through the top of the tank?
Any advice is appreciated.

Steve Passmore

Yes to both questions John. It is on the top but the tank has to come out to do it.

John: While you have the tank out and before you put in the new sending unit, I make sure the new unit works by hooking the sending wire to the new unit. Then use a wire with alligator clips on both ends and clip one end to the unit and the other to a clean grounding point on the frame. Operate the sending unit arm up and down while checking your dash gauge for like movement. Did not do this on the first unit I ever changed and paid the price of dropping the tank again. Also make sure you install a new gasket between the unit and the tank. Forgetting a gasket can be a great teacher as I have also found out.   Bill
