Where can I find this 6-Volt 6-Wire Voltage Regulator?

Hello, I need to purchase an NOS or the like Delco-Remy 6-Volt, 6-wire POSGround Voltage Regulator. The number is 5518 and it fits 1937 Cadillac Series 70, 75, 85, and 90.

Ty, they are rare as hens teeth.  Cadillac issued a service letter in December 1941 announcing they would be discontinued and listed a 3-wire replacement.  See attached.  If you have the old one, suggest you put the later/modern innards in it.  Gene

I had no idea regarding this change. Thank you Gene. You must have just saved me months trying to find one. Now, where do I get the replacement - they seem cheap enough at $7.15 ha, ha.

Curious though. My 1937 Cadillac and LaSalle Manual states Regulator #5518 but your 1941 article references a number of #005818. Hard to read (bad stamp) but I think mine is #5818. Do you think they are both the same and POSground?

Ty, there are a few different ones that will work,i used one for a old ford tractor on mine,mine is a 60 series,wiring might be a little different?.the one i used has 5 wires,the extra one is left unhooked?,i can get you the part number if you like,it is available at Napa too.I have used it for the last 8 years with no problems,the original regulator is in a small case,would be hard to put the internals from a 3 wire in it,most of the 3 wire boxes are larger,let me know and i can get you the number if you want. Hello Harvey, good to talk with you again. Would you mind reading the article again because it talks about a different regulator for the 60 series. But, I need what works for the 70, 75, 85, 90 and would use what ever would work.

Hello, my 1937 Cadillac 6 volt 6-wire POSground regulator was replaced by GM in 1941 with part number 1886970 3-wire regulator to include a new adapter mounting bracket. They also mentioned replacement number 1118230. Will your 1118302 be the same without having the adapter mounting bracket? My generator output is 8-10 amps and has a 26 amps max. Can anyone speck out the following ebay offer and let me know if it will work? The vendor does not know.

Hello Glen, yes this is the one I'm questioning. Do you think it will work? Vendor does not know if it is POS ground or the amps.

The clip below is from the 1950 Master Parts Book.  It says that is for the 1940 -1942.  The next clip is from the 1940 Shop Manual and gives the specs for the electrical system.  It looks like it might work OK but there is no info about mounting or the hookup of the wires.   

Note the shop manual gives the part number for the regulator as 1118202.

Okay, thanks to everyone. I think I have it worked out now thanks to you.

My original 6-lead is a Delco-Remy #005818. That was replaced in 1941 by a 3-lead Delco-Remy #1118230. This 3-lead Cadillac voltage regulator has now been replaced with one sold by Motor City Reman for $84.99 as their #81-1921.

(Motor City Reman also sells a replacement for Delco-Remy #1118302 used on Cadillacs 1940-1942. Their number is 81-1922 for $76.49. The original Delco-Remy #1118302 is the one on ebay with a starting bid of $50.00.)

My question now is how to hook up the wire from the generator to GEN (as on the original replacement #1118230), which is now shown as AMP rather than GEN. So now that would be generator to AMP (?) to include the "R" (Starter Relay); and ground the Ground, and cut off the Ignition. Then "F" to "F" and "B" to "B".

Attached are the official instructions in the Dec 1941 pg 52 issue of the Cadillac Serviceman.  I would not follow the instructions to cut off the Ign terminal.  Just tape it up and hide it.  You may someday get a 6 terminal unit and want that terminal on it.  From the picture you can see what the adapter plate looks like.  Just make up two plates similar.  I do have a 6 terminal unit if you want to go in that direction but it needs to be rebuilt.

Many thanks everyone. All generator and voltage regulator checks have been made and it appears that the generator is bad. I have ordered the replacement regulator and hope to have another generator in a few days.
