I am assisting another Cadillac owner with their hesitation issues and while checking out the carb I noticed the gasket used on the main jets doesnt line up with the holes. I know the rebuild kits come with several different primary gaskets. I am assuming they chose incorrectly. In addition I am assuming this could be the source of their issues.

Thoughts?

One has to start somewhere. Might as well be with the correct gasket.

Yeah, the more I read, I guess blocking the idle air bleed and high speed air bleed are generally bad ideas...  ::)

Well now here’s the kicker... the gasket matches the carb body but not the secondary Venturi pack?!?

Sounds like you might have one of the rare model “mix and match” carbs.

I assume this “feature” is not from the factory...

Interesting...it appears the hole between the high speed bleed passage and the initial discharge port is blocked by the gasket intentionally as there is nothing that lines up with it on the carb body.

From the diagram it looks like there are channels in the carb top and carb body that link the high-speed bleed, secondary high-speed passage and the high-speed initial discharge port.  It is hard to tell exactly from the picture, though.

What year car and the number on the carb?   I can look at my stock pile.

That's what I see on the 63 and 64 carter carbs I have.  The gaskets match up to the carb base, but not to the venture holes.

My 66 with Carter AFB will develop hesitatation when a fine layer of gunk accumulates on the power pistons and bores, causing them to stick.  I attribute it to the corrosive effect of ethanol and other modern fuel additives on the elastomers in the fuel system.  Cleaning the gunk off the pistons and bores with Berrymans and some superfine steel wool eliminates the sticking for about 12 months.

I rebuilt my Carter and recall having to select from the gaskets but ended up with a perfect alignment with the holes
if I saw the top pic I would assume something is wrong

Issue resolved...the metering rods had different springs (one super loose, the other medium stiff)  :o  >:(
