130 mph in a 1955 Olds wow!

Back in the 1990's and earlier you could order everything, now it is all packages and not easy to get a nice highway gear.  My 1996 Suburban (2.56 or something like that, 75 mph was 2,000 rpm), and it got 22 mpg at that speed, unheard for that type of vehicle.

My 1985 Caprice with 305 V-8 got 27 mpg at 75 mph with ac on, and coupled with the 26 gallon fuel tank, 600 miles on one fill up was no problem on highway trips - probably my best car ever on gas that has a V-8 and seats 6.  It had a low first gear and had nice (spin the wheel) low end power.  30 years later is there a RWD car with a V-8 that gets that mileage and enjoys that range? - no there is not.

I find it interesting that the Turnpike Cruiser was fitted with radial tires, not only for better gas mileage, but for stability at higher speeds as well.  Even in 1967, they knew that bias ply tires weren't the best thing since sliced bread.

The '68 Vista Cruiser we had did not have radial tires, but had the Turnpike Cruising package.  I think radials were optional on the Toronado.  It sure had a nice exhaust tone.
