While Im dealing with stuck on in running condition ignition problem on my 79 Caddy. I have to move car. Unhooking battery only has alternator take over. I don't like shorting out to stall engine. Is there a safe way to shut engine down. Yes there is plastic plug in on alternator which may break pulling it out. While engine stopped, if I remove the battery wire off alternator and run the car on battery only will I harm the alternator and will engine shut off when battery is unhooked.     To those of you who reading this for first time Im the guy with the column switch stuck in the run condition, Starting the
car is no problem just a safe way is needed to shut it down. Thanks Gene

Still factory EFI?    Find the fuse for the fuel pumps, injectors, or ECU.   EFI or not pull the ignition fuse.   You could pull the BATT wire off the coil/cap but being an Olds its not the easiest thing to get to especially on a running engine.

Or

Unbolt the switch mechanism from the side of the column under the dash and let it hang from the wires.  Use a screwdriver to operate the switch.

I think messing with alternator and ignition under the hood wiring
is VERY BAD when the engine is running.  Hate to think of what
that might cause.

Your 79 Eldo (and mine) have a 20A fuse marked EFI in the fuse
block.  its near the bottom in a row of 3 fuses, center position.
Pulling this fuse will instantly shut down the fuel injection and the
fuel pumps, no opening the hood.  Bruce Roe

I found the way to stop the engine running by unhooking the battery lead to the HEI see pix. Pulling the steering wheel to check frozen column switch or
lowering steering unit to check ignition switch is a winter project.  I do have push button installed on dash which works well.  Thanks for tips. Gene

After it is stopped you still need to disconnect the battery.  Otherwise the
fuel pumps, EFI, auto leveling, and some other stuff will soon run down
your battery.  Bruce Roe
