I bought a 68 shop manual for a car i now realize is a 70 (i swear the owner said it was a 68).  Are the manuals the same for vac routing, timing, etc or do i really need to just get a 70 book?

You need a 70 book. Its best to google and look at the front ends of each of these cadillac. 68 front has the double stacked headlights and was the only hood lip moulding of the 60s era to actually angle down instead of straight across.

I suppose if you were not looking for a specific year it would be easy to make that mistake without knowing beforehand. But yes there will probably be a difference. If I understand it correctly there were a few things that were specific to 68. Your best bet is to get a 70 shop manual. You can usually find a beat up one pretty cheap on ebay. My 68 manual was $15

I would suggest you assume NOTHING is the same. If you repair/alter something according to the wrong manual you will spend a month trying to figure out what went wrong. I am sure somebody here will buy your 68 manual.

Or you could get a 68 Cadillac to go with the manual.

They are not THAT different. Same engine (68 was the first year for the 472), same trans, but there ARE changes.

Get the Fisher body manual too.

The 68 and 472 differences:

1.  timing
2.  compression ratio
3.  smog pump and diverter
4.  fan clutch vs. no fan clutch
5.  heat riser location
6.  vacuum retard solenoid
7.  fuel filter and fuel pump - way different
8.  brake booster
