Hi,
I’m rebuilding all the brakes on my ‘52 series 62 coupe. The rear drums look good on the inside but there’s this small slot in the edge of the drum. It looks stock but is it? And what is that spring for? Never worked on cars this old so I could use some help😬

The slot is for inserting the feeler gauge in there during the adjusting operation, and the spring is an anti-squeak/squeal thing.

You do have the Shop Manual?

Thanks Bruce, I guess I will just keep that spring on there.
Yes I got the shop manual. The spring is called “dampener spring”.
