In years past, I made and sold a spacer as a replacement for the valve, which in warm climates seemed to be fine.  It was under $20.  But a few years ago I sold the rest of my inventory of these parts to Fusick's in the northeast.  Check with them to see if they still have some...

Ed,

I have a 1951 with the same spacer. Mine cracked in half at the pin location on each side. I was able to tig weld it back together. Since I live in a warm climate, I don't need the extra heat to be recirculated. I left out the butterfly valve and left the spring and counterweight. After cleaning up the welds and spraying it with exhaust paint, you can't tell that it isn't stock.

I didn't know to check with Fusick's when I did that work about a year ago. I did check with McVey's and they had a NOS replacement in stock, but I tried the cheaper alternative first.

For my '49 I had a spacer made to the same dimensions as the original heat riser, but without the valve, the holes for the valve axle and the spring.  I also live in a climate where the winters are not severe and the car runs fine without a functioning heat riser.

I just had a spacer lasered here in Denver for $25 for my '49 331.  I have contact info to have one made, and I'm also willing to share the cad file I created for it (.dwg or .dxf) if you'd like to have someone local laser one for you.
