I’m a recent new owner of a 1970 Coupe DeVille. I can’t find any button or lever to release the top half of the seat to gain access to the rear seat. Any help would be appreciated. Russ

G'day Russ,

If there is no lever to release the seat back, then it could quite possible be that the previous owner replaced the original seat with one from a Sedan.   They will it the mountings, but lack any tilting mechanism.

Your photo shows that the car is equipped with power door locks.  Coupes with power door locks had a solenoid release in each seat back, and a small manual latch at the lower outboard corner of each seat back, to release the seat back manually.

If Bruce's hypothesis turns out to be correct, you can remove the seat shields on each seat back, and remove the locking plate at the lower outboard edge of each seat back, which will allow the seat backs to pivot.  However, there will be no locking feature, and the seat backs will be allowed to pivot at all times. Send me a PM if you need the electric solenoid locks/releases for inside the seat backs.

Charles, I removed the outer side shield and didn’t see anything I could remove to release it to tilt. I’m thinking someone replaced the original seat like you guys are have assumed. How do I PM you?
