72 caddy perfect running carb.

Hello,
Does anyone have a beautifully running 72 caddy (Mine is a Fleetwood brougham 60 special) with a 472 engine with a manual choke, speed control and a/c and have to part it out due to accident, rot out etc? I need the carburetor. I don’t want to buy a rebuilt. I have done that with bad results. I want to buy one off a beautifully running car. That way I know the carburetor is good. Any help would be appreciated.

Greg,
I know adjustments have to be made but I paid a mechanic who put 2 rebuilt on my car from a vendor and the first one was junk and the one on the car now runs like garbage no matter what adjustments. I know it is not anything else because before the jerk replaced my original carb. The engine ran smooth. The carb. Was stolen off the car in storage. I just want a carb. That I know is currently running smooth. Then a few minor adjustments can be made but these rebuilts have been terrible. If I buy a currently running smooth carb., I know I will be ok.I can’t keep buying.terrible rebuilts. I just want my car to run smooth like it used to that is all. Right now it runs rough and shakes and I am on my 2nd rebuilt. Thanks Greg

Greg, are you saying that it is who does the rebuilding that matters? I believe the 2 carbs. Tried on my car came from autozone and advanced auto parts.

For the most part, you cannot put just any rebuilt Q-Jet on a car and expect good results.  The be correct and to expect a good running engine, the carb must have the correct numbers, there were differences every year (hence different numbers for every year) and for every make car they were on.  The very best way to get the best results is to have the carb on your car rebuilt --- not exchanged.  Yes, I realize this is not possible in your case, that is why I feel that a rebuilt like Greg's that has the correct numbers is the next best thing you can do.  Q-Jets are excellent carburetors but I would never take a parts store exchange.  There are several very good carb rebuilders across the country that do excellent rebuilds on Q-Jets, Daytona Parts in Florida being one that is very highly regarded --- www.daytonaparts.com  Any Q-Jet you get off a running car is going to be a used Q-Jet, subject to needing an overhaul at some point in time that is not possible to know, but it could well be sooner than later, then you are back in the same boat.

A quality rebuild will include a bench flow test or run on a test engine.   
I suspect there might be other issues here.   Maybe not all that was done during the theft/vandalism.
If one needed "correct" number carb on every vehicle to make it run, the aftermarket would be devoid of options.   This is how mythology results.

I stand 100% behind what I posted, putting an incorrect Q-Jet on your Cadillac is a crap-shoot at the very best.  There may very well be other issues here, but starting with the right carb for your engine and year is a no-brainer.  You don't need the correct carb. to make it run, you need the correct carb to make it run right, then you can look for other possible problems if running problems still exist.
