Hi,

This car has not had a functioning parking brake in at least 40 years. I just installed new brake cables and adjusted them according to the service manual. My question is when I pull on the hand lever it holds the brakes tight, but it doesn't make a ratcheting sound like I would expect. The brakes release like they should. Should it be making a ratcheting sound?

No.  Just hold the brakes to firmly set and pull the lever full aft.

My 41 Cadillac makes no noise setting the brake.
