I thought it was introduced simultaneously to all GM divisions for all 1963 models.

The 62 Chevy Impala I had back in 68-70 had the alternator. My current 63 CDV has the alternator. Maybe someone with a 62 Cad will let us know if their car has a generator or an alternator.

Alternator first appeared on Cadillac in 1963. That I know for a fact.
I cannot speak for other GM Divisions.

1963 across the board for GM.
Cadillac, however was the last to get an internal voltage regulated alternator. Go figure.

Chevy had them in 1962. According to the 1962 passenger car specifications, the 42A (RPO 317), 52A (RPO 434) and 62A (RPO 435) alternators were available on all engines as a factory fitted option.

PS: They are not called alternators by GM. The correct GM terminology is generator. Alternator is Chrysler trade marked name.

The alternators produce alternating current (and then rectify it to direct current) and that is why they are called alternators. Cadillac stuck with marking the idiot lights "generator" until at least the late 70's. Why? Probably to not confuse us old foggies that are stuck in the 50's

The old generators might have been more efficient, because
they used a mechanical switch (brushes) to convert to DC.
The alternator must suffer a couple diode drops, on the
order of 15% of the power.

Alternators had been around, but they did not get into cars
until we had the silicon diodes that could be mounted in the
case.  Alternators greatly reduced weight, maintenance, and
electrial interference.  Practical alternators could have
far greater output.  And under hood wiring was simpilified.
