Defroster Cable/Lever

1960 Cadillac, but my former 1959 had the same issue. The defroster lever will only go to the right to defog and stop.

It will not go over to deice. So why is this?

Cable moves freely until that then stops.

This photo is the cable that moves with the defrost lever. I think the lever is to the far left on the control in this photo. It looks like the inner wire does not have a lot of length to move.

How do I adjust this, or did someone use a cable too short at one point.

My 1959 defrost lever was the same.

"Cadillac Kid" Greg Surfas 15364

Seems like there have been a lot of various lengths made over the years and a lot of them have been misapplied. Disconnect the cable at the arm and see if the arm will go to the full position. If so you have the wrong cable

As I look some more I agree.

I am going to disengage the cable where the lock washer is and see if the mechanism and the lever give me a full range of motion.

Then if the mechanism does its the wrong cable or more likely the cable has a bind in it somewhere behind the control where I cannot see it.

When I put the nub back it it moves only to defog, when I disengage that nub the lever will go to the d in deice, but in the off position it is just to the right of off.

I am betting on a kink in the cable somewhere, when the nub is engaged it gives me more resistance to bind up.

If so then when I do my dash over probably next winter I can see what is going on and replace the cable since I have some on hand.
