Rebuilding a fuel pump with vacuum when you don't need vacuum?

I have a leaking fuel pump I need to rebuild.  Its got the vacuum section on the top for the wipers but the wipers have been converted to electric so nothing is connected to the vacuum section.

Should I rebuild the vacuum section and leave it unhooked? Stick a fuel filter on it so it doesn't suck dirt?  Or should or can I leave some parts out of it to reduce stress or wear?   I have never had one of these apart so maybe its not practical to leave bits off?
