1961 fuel sending unit

Looks (and smells) like my fuel sending unit gasket is RIP.  May as well replace the unit as well, but can that be done without dropping the tank?  Also, are some replacement units better than others?  I'm seeing rebuilt originals.  Are they worth spending 3 times more?

Not sure about the quality of a rebuilt sending unit, but without a doubt you have to pull the tank. The next option is a hole in the trunk floor for access. The next trick will be cutting that hole without damaging the tank or creating a spark that eliminates the problem and a few more entirely.

Eeek. No holes! Nature gives us plenty of those to worry about.

Dropping the tank is very easy. Just make sure you disconnect the ground wire from the frame first.

Thanks for the heads up.  Now if I can just get the remaining fuel out of there.

I take it that 1961 didn't have a fuel tank drain plug in it.

Little things like that make working on these old car soooo much easier.
