I cant locate my VIN #....                                  1956 Cadillac   Series 62  4 - door sedan

Try looking on the top frame rail on the left (driver) side about in the area where the brake hose connects.  Also there may be a lube plate on the drivers side door post.  These are held on with two screws so it could be missing.  It will also be stamped on the engine.  Of course if the engine has been replaced the number wont match.
