I grabbed this out of the one and only Cadillac that I have ever parted out. It was a 70 but I was just wondering if you guys thought it original or not. Im trying to get rid of the junk I have in preparing for my move.

Thanks,
Stampie

Stampie, it looks original to me. I have 2 original 70 spares, one Firestone & the other Uniroyal. The Uniroyal is stored at another location so I couldnt compare it. Bob

It could very well be. The dual stripe was unique to the late 60s early 70s.

There should be a date code on the tire somewhere so that you can see just when it was manufactured. Im not sure as to how to determine it, but that post in the Modified Board may do it for you.

Typically, tires in the 70s were replaced every 2 years, given that they rarely went beyond 30,000 miles, so it is also possible that this tire may be a replacement from 1971-73.

I just went out and looked but the only kind of date code I could find was OA4334.  That didnt match up with what I googled but when I get a chance Ill look some more.

Thanks guys,

I believe it is original.  That dual-ring whitewall was used from 1967 through 1970.  The only thing that throws me a little is the name Uniroyal.  Im not sure when the name changed from US Royal.

1965 and 1966 used a triple-ring whitewall, and in 1971, I believe they switched to a regular, single-ring whitewall.

Hope that helps!

Stampie,
Try looking for a series of numbers that begins with DOT.  The last three numbers should be the date code.  It is the number of the week it was made, followed by the last digit of the year.  For example, 150 could be the code for the 15th week of 1970.  The JC Penney spare in my 66 had a 1970 code.

Modern tires use a four digit code to be more precise.  The tires I bought last year have 1305 as the date code, meaning the 13th week of 2005.

Prior to 2000, they used the three digit date code.  So, I suppose a tire built January 5th, 1970, would have the same code as one built January 5th, 1980 and 1990.

Let us know if that helps you at all.

Found this:  In 1967, U.S. Rubber unified all its diverse trademarks and subsidiaries in 23 countries under the name Uniroyal, Inc.

I can remember those TV commercials when I was a little kid with three stunt drivers:  Uni, Roy, and Al.
