John Washburn CLC 1067 Sadly deceased.

Folks,

A friend and member of the CLC (Elmer Brown) has asked me to see if anyone has or knows how to rebuild a convertible top switch, that fits under the dash, to actuate the top. His leaks and the bakelight housing is cracked.

Thanks for the help in advance

Hi John:

When I did my '47 convert. about 4 years ago I took apart that valve. There are pictures of it and its parts on page 123 of the '46-'47 Fisher Body Manual. I think the housing can be fixed with JB weld. There are a couple of rubber seals that can be replaced and all the metal electrical contact surfaces need to be cleaned. I was surprised to find old hardened grease in mine. I cleaned it out a replaced it with new grease. I assume that the grease was to prevent leakage as well as lubricate as it was literally packed with grease. That is about all I can remember about it except that it does work well. Maybe Bill Ingler remembers more than I do.

:D John; I have a convert top switch from my 47 that I am not going to use. I will try to put my hands on it tomorrow, it is on a shelf with lots of mixed parts. I do not recall it being broken in any way. It came off of a car last registered 1963 $500. as is.  thanks Gene

UPDATE..
I found it right where I put it 12 years ago, this may not impress anyone but me. Nothing broken and complete with mounting brackets and llinkage with chrome "top" pull moves freely and spring return to off position.
