In the early 70's they were still using acrylic lacquer -- this was about 15+ years before clear
coat finishes started to become common here in the U.S.

So, especially if you have original paint, you need a very mild polish to remove oxidation
(such as 3M's Finesse It, or one of the products from Meguiers) and then follow with
a plain (no polishing agents) carnuba based wax.  Mothers makes a good one as does
Meguiers.  Here's a couple websites to get you started:

My 1973 Eldorado still has it's original paint (nobody believes me at shows) and I've
been following this protocol since I bought it in 1973.

Whatever you do, use nothing harsh such as rubbing or standard polishing compound --
you'll be down to the primer very fast!!  Also, unless you really know what you're doing -- do
the polishing by HAND and forget about a buffer.  It takes a bit of work but the end result is very satisfying.

Thanks Mike for the reply. My Cadillac is a 1970 Coupe DeVille, 66,000 miles with original
Bayberry paint (code 59). I'll check the links you provided and learn more about paint protection.
