Steering knuckle & shims, '40 S50

Hi everyone,

I'm just putting the steering knuckles back in, with new kingpins and parts from a kit.
I had a couple of minor questions:
The thrust bearing has one face that is flat ground, and another face that is a standard stamped finish. Does it matter which orientation this goes in?

Also, there were some shims in with the kit (from Kanter's). Do these shims need to go in between every mating surface (bottom of thrust bearing, top of thrust bearing, top of knuckle support), or are they just to be used as needed to take up the thrust slop between the knuckle support and steering knuckle?
The service manual shows just one shim in the picture, at the top face of the knuckle support, and doesn't say any more about it, and I have 5 shims in this kit.

Now that I type it out, it actually seems more obvious ... oh well, feedback still appreciated!
