G'day Murray,

A 1.5 Ton Trolley Jack will suffice, and not one of those cheap imported ones as they are too narrow in the wheel track width and too short to be safe.

Get yourself an Apac Jack, or one the same as what the local Service Stations or Mechanics use.   Actually, they may just be 2.5 Tons, but there is no substitute for safety.

These days, there are a lot of Garages closing down, and their jacks become available.

PS.   Get a couple of good quality Screw Jack Stands to support the car on whilst it is up.

PPS.   Front of car weighs around 1.25 Tons, and the Rear around 1 Ton, but could be more with a full tank of petrol and parts in the boot.

I would just go right to the 2.5 / 3 ton models.    If you have a chance to demo them in person jack it up a bit and then stand on it and lower it.   A lot of the cheapo jacks have poor control on the lowering valve.  Many of them seem to stick then suddenly pop and when they pop the load seems to suddenly drop which can be a problem on many levels.  You want one that has a smooth control operation and takes at least 1/2 a turn to change the lowering speed.    If you have an air compressor and the money an air operated one is really nice.   It really helps when you are way under the car with no room to swing the handle.

I got this model.  Its a 5 ton so plenty of overkill for most jobs but as long as you can get it under the car there is no such thing as too strong.   I have had it for 5 years or so and its my primary jack.   I still have a couple 2.5's but they just get used when I need multiple jacks or need to take one somewehre.  THe 5 ton is a lot for one person to try and pick up.

as the car weighs close to 2 1/2 tons, i would go for at least a 2 1/2 ton jack, and not one of the little $19 walmart jobs you throw in your trunk either
they are only  good for lifting one wheel at a time while changing a tire

i would get a larger frame unit, for stability reasons with a rating  of at least 2 tons
that is more than either end of the car is,but you will always lift a car easier with a jack that is not near its limits of capability
a larger jack is more likely to have swivel casters at the rear also making it much easier to use
do some research as the minimum lowered height and maximum lifting height vary quite considerably between brands
i lust replaced my old 5000lb unit with a 7000lb unit and it lifts everything i lift so much easier

the jacks already have a built in safety feature, but i will not be one of the people to test it

i would purchase the biggest jack as practical for your situation, and remember ,the caddy may not be the only thing you may want to lift
a lot of new suv's and pick ups are pushing the 3 ton weight threshold
