Wow, lots of interesting info!  I don't have a tach in the Eldo so I have no clue what the RPMs are.  I know it shifts into third because it shifts into second like in ten feet (rather abruptly) and then shifts again at a normal speed.  The engine isn't "racing" per se, but just seems like it would be more comfortable with another gear.  My other sunny day car is a 66 Monza convertible and it has only TWO speeds so I guess I should be grateful, huh?

David,
With a good vacuum modulator and a transmission that shifts into second abruptly. I would venture to say there is definitely something wrong with your transmission.
