Can someone tell me how much play (up & down motion ) should be in the intermediate steering arm and bracket joint located in the center rear of the front frame cross member? This is on a '37 5011 series LaSalle. Thanks in advance for any information or wild guesses  but please state which it is. Thanks

Normally, there should be none.

Play will cause Bump-steer as it moves up and down.

Bruce is correct, and rather agriculturally on this model you just keep tightening the large bolt under the cross member which pulls the top and bottom support together until the play is gone.  Up and down play will give really loose steering.

I had to buy and install the bushing kit. Then some slight shimming under the arm. Any play at all will make toe in adjustment impossible.
