I am in need of a set of main bearings for a 59 Cad 390 engine, standard size. My machinist wants tri-metal bearings, not the imported ones for sale most places.

Thanks

I thought all bearings were "Tri-metal"

They have a steel back, then a softer layer of a Copper Lead combination, and then the final covering of a Babbitt Metal, as in white-lead.

The only single layer bearings are the ones that are poured in situ in the much older engines.

I thought so too.  I can only go by what he tells me, he is a very well respected builder of race engines, he knows his stuff.  He explained to me about the requirements for the bearings (Duro something for the thrust bearing, etc.) even showed it to me in his bearing reference guide.
Just trying to get this thing done!
