Has anyone replaced a 49-53 Cad 331 engine without pulling the transmission with it ? I need to know the best way of reinstalling the engine properly so as NOT to damage the pilot bearing. Should I pull the drive shaft and slide the tranny back, or is there some other method ?

From my experience in pulling/replacing engines, it is always best to do it with the transmission attached if possible. Attaching a transmission from below can be a headache. Just protect the tail shaft with a secured rag.
