I just received my recent  purchase, a 1940 LaSalle 5029, 4 door convertible sedan.

It has very nice tan (wife calls it caramel) upholstery seats, and door panels.

I am planning on restoring the car and hate to tear these seats apart to refinish them.

Is is anybody in trading them for seats needing restoration?  Just pondering the question.

This may not be feasible but just sounds like a  good idea.

That  would be a great idea Gary but its something that may not work as you hope. My friend Jim Stampler has the same model I think and when having the front seats re covered found that the front seat has to be virtually dismantled to be removed.  It could not be taken out as one piece because it formed the support for the body side pillars and had to be trimmed in place.
Maybe Jim can chip in here and clarify?

Actually it is the divider that connects the pillars together, with an expansion leather piece from the divider to the top of the front seat. It acts as an expansion joint as the seat is adjusted forward or backward so the space behind the seat remains covered.  I have not quite re-attached that leather piece, as the staples want to be hidden and underneath the leather. No access. I am sure there is a way and I haven't gotten into it to work it out yet. It is a one piece seat however and it weighs a lot.

As I was working alone I ran a seat belt strap clear around the middle of the seat and used an engine hoist to take it in and out. That worked very well.

Thanks for the answers. I am in the upholstery phase of my 1942 Cadillac restoration and it has the fixed bulkhead behind the drivers seat also but it looks like the expansion joint you are mentioning. The LaSalle is in the shop getting a brake job and a dual master cylinder installed so I can not check it out right now.

By the way I am trying to get some information about the history of this car. Possibly some of the long time LaSalle guys have some knowledge of portions of it's history??

Who do I contact about the LaSalle Appreciation chapter also?
