I pulled all the lifter assemblies out of my other motor that runs and runs quiet but burns oil. Swapped everything and it 100% fixed the problem. Started at 11:15am and was finished and had the car warmed up and went for some gas by 3:00pm. Very happy with this success!

Thank you everyone for your advice!!

Joe, Glad you were able to get the lifters quieted down. Harry

Me too. But now I have another quandry. The lifters and related parts I pulled out look just fine. I am wondering why they wouldn't run silently. I am going to take them and clean every part thoroughly and see if I can figure out what is going on with them. Could it be the seats of the check valves worn out? If so then just buying new plungers should bring them back to like new.

This is what it sounds like now... the noisiest thing now is the incorrect fan belt.

Joe, Sounds good. The checking mechanizm inside the plunger consists of a round steel ball that seats in the taper portion. I guess it is possible for some wear but I think crud would be more likely. The other thing to check is the plunger holder for wear at the contact point with the cam. If you decide to replace the plungers Terrell may still have some WW II surplus ones which were made by Cadillac.   Harry

Sounds fantastic. Wondering if more intake sound is heard from the paper element?

There appears to be a small air leak around the choke coil cover. It changes if I wiggle it around a bit. I will have to go back to the rebuilder with the car and ask him about that. I don't think the paper filter is louder. Most of the noise is from the rad fan and the leak around the choke cover. The camera really does amplify the air rushing sound, much more than can be heard with the ears.
