You did get lucky.
The only time I ever tipped in advance was when I was getting a new roof on my house.
I have the crew $50.00 and said lunch is on me. Don't cut any corners and use lots of nails!

The job came out great and they cleaned up after like I couldn't believe.  They even used a magnetic roller and ran it all over driveway and lawn to pick up stray nails.

I was finding old nails around for weeks after it was windy or rainy but that is unavoidable.

In restaurants I find there can be -- otherwise -- a variety of service. A server with a problem is not getting tips. This worsens their attitude and service gets worse and tips get even lower. But when I tip a server in advance, and tell them I am expecting good service, I have ALWAYS had great service.

Yeah, I tipped the car hauler when he got here. Had the feeling that most poeple do not. He really went the extra mile  ;D to get it here quickly, but he also went the further mies to get it unloaded and pushed into my garage.

Tipped him when he got here, before unloading. Would the service been as good if I had not tipped him? Don't know.

There is real magic in the $5 tip. When I go on cruise ships, I tip EVERYBODY $5 AS I AM BOARDING (the people who will be waiting on me personally, cleaning crew, food service -- this can be as much as ten people. Yeah, $50, big whuf! But I have had them extend service far beyond the norm.

And when I go back to the same restaurant, I have fantastic service. Even have had some waiters arguing over who was going to serve me. For a $5 tip? Are you kidding me? Cheap!!!

Ever been in a long line to get into a restaurant? Shake hands with the Matre De and leave a ten in his hands and he will, in a few minutes find you a table as though you had reservations. Or would I rather stand in line for an hour?

Work for me!

Sounds a lot like bribery to me.

And Bribery is illegal, or it was when I was working.

I'm with you 100% Bruce.
If its classed as a 'Tip'  then is it still a 'tip'  if you offer money to a Judge before your court case for better service? or to a police officer before he hands you a speeding ticket?  I don't think even in the US that can be disguised as anything other than a bribe!

. Before the service I have not done. This announces to the supplier that you expect that service to exceed the expectation. I might try that some time. Art

If you tip a doorman to ensure you jump ahead of the queue of people who are waiting their turn patiently then thats a bribe in anyones book and is morally wrong.
