Based on the issues with returning the battery tenders on various forums (they charge a $12.95 "Evaluation and Return Shipping Fee". ), I switched to these about 5 years ago.

I still have some old Battery Tenders that work great...but didn't want to chance it if I had to return any in future.

Minders also have some additional features.  Chuck

Just yesterday I picked up a Schumacher 1.5 amp battery maintainer for $19.99 that has auto voltage detection (6 or 12 volt), float mode monitoring and reverse hook up protection.

That sounds like the ideal auto battery maintainer at the right price.  $18 on line.  I do NOT
recommend connecting clips directly to the battery; high probability the clips will eventually
fail of corrosion.  Connect somewhere else, or connect a polarized plug to the charger, and
wire its mate into the car wiring.  Bruce Roe

So what would happen if you had one of those auto voltage sense units and hooked it to a 12v battery that was discharged down to say 5.5v?  Would it only charge it up to 6 volts?

I believe at 6V high, it would shut down to a pretty low current, but before long that
current would bring it into the 12V range.

In truth, if it has been at 6V for any time, its probably pretty much killed.  Bruce Roe

Although I recently sold my Cadillac I got one of these for winter storage of my Challenger. It will also maintain 6 volt batteries.
