remounting '72 tank, and the sending unit

I think I have the hoses back on my tank, although there seem to be three sizes of nipple and only two sizes of fuel hose (5/16 & 3/8).

But I can't figure out where to reattach the sending unit sensor:

(I do seem to have one more ground wire than the shop manual suggests--the one attached to a screw on the sending unit)

Answering my own question . . .

lower the license plate for fuel access, and the answer is obvious :)

It's there, not under the car. 

Which, being very obvious, explains why I didn't tag it or take a picture . . .
