Just installed a new compressor and clutch from a reputable rebuild place.  On start up with a/c off, the clutch spins say a full turn here and there every 20 seconds (3 rpm).  Have not engage clutch yet, as other wiring issues to fix first - total restore here.

Anyway, question is that never seen a clutch drag like this, is it OK or should I fix it?

Is the compressor unplugged? If you are still troubleshooting electrical issues, there may be a trickle of voltage to the compressor causing it to partially engage.

Compressor is unplugged, no possible way clutch receives current.

The clutch/compressor were purchased as a unit.  I do not know what clearances are (guess between surfaces that are separate un-energized, but in intimate contact after magnet is engaged).

Main question is, do I need to deal with this or ignore?  If answer is that I have to fix, then will send back for replacement.

It will continue to drag, create heat, drag some more until it starts smoking. Happened to me. Get out the shop manual and check/adjust the clutch gap as per the detailed instructions you or your mechanic will find there. Rebuilders do not always set the gap.

OK Thanks, I will send it back.  Even though perhaps I could set the gap.  The refrigerant has not been added.
