55 Cadillac brake question

Had the Fleetwood out yesterday for a Cruz. 60 degrees on November 8 pretty dare nice for southeastern Wisconsin. I have never locked up the brakes on the 55 so I decided to give it a try on a deserted dead end road actually it's the road to my house. What happened is that the caddy stopped pretty much evenly but the engine died so I tried it again same result. I had the booster rebuilt about five years ago.The caddy starts right back up again no problems. Any thoughts?

It is normal for a carburetor to stall out the car if the throttle is closed too quickly or if the car is suddenly jolted. Cars in minor accidents frequently stall on impact.

Carburetors often have dashpots or dampers to minimize this. These slow down the closing of the throttle. They are usually adjustable. I don't know if the 1955 Cadillac has one or not.

My 1940 LaSalle does not have one. My 1956 Continental does.

I suspect that modern cars with fuel injection do not have this problem

56 Cadillacs (and I think 55) often had this dashpot.  I once found a NOS unit and installed it on one of my 55 or 56 cars.  I still have the old one, which could be rebuilt by Terrill Machine...

There is no dashpot (I assume you mean a vacuum type)

I see that this is an old post brought back to life. I am going to suggest transmission. My thinking is that the transmission didn't disengage fast enough and that killed the engine. Started right up because it had a second to disengage. Mine would come close to stalling when I came to a stop but now that I have a few miles on it it seems better.

56 does have the dashpot (at least some).  I don't think any of my 55s did.

If you equate dashpot with idle speed control than 1954-1957 cars with 4GC Rochester Carburetors has it. But only  if the car is equipped with air condition
Cars with dual Rochester 4GC carbs has only one on the second carb. The idle speed adjustment is 900 RPM.
I don´t know for Charter carbs.

I went back and looked at an old photo of my very original 1955 sedan (an A/C car).  It has the idle speed up solenoid (see it over near the compressor, mounted to the front of the carb air horn).  But it doesn't have the anti-stall dashpot that my 56 FW with A/C had. 


First picture is the 55 carb with speed up solenoid.  Second picture is the 56 with the anti-stall dashpot (which mounts to the firewall, not to the carb).  The third picture shows the 56 carb with A/C also with the speed up solenoid on the front, passenger side of the carb...

That dash pot actually attaches to the firewall and engages the linkage.
