From an earlier post of mine in Technical/Authenticity, I was asking about repairing an oil logged fuel pump pickup.  Well I found a replacement but it turns out not to match the one I need so I decided to start a new thread.

The part I need is the one on the right in the photo.  The one I received is on the left.  Were there different designs through the years or maybe the smaller one is from a different engine?

Still in need....Does anyone have a good oil pump pickup they are willing to sell?
Thanks,
Scott

The small one looks like my 346. The one on the right may be from a tank engine. They used a different oil pan. Try Eddie Jones at 612 5582629. He is a great guy and has a lot of knowledge about these flatheads. Ron Parker

The pickup on the left is the correct one for V8s from 1940 - 1948.  1936 - 1939 V8s used a different pickup according to the Master Parts List (section 8.3889).  This could be the difference you are encountering.  I have not seen a '36 - '39 pickup so cannot say with certainty.

We have 1940 and 1937 LaSalles and both oil pick ups are the same as are the pumps. We used a tank engine and rebuilt it for a 1936 Cadillac. The tank engine I know had a deeper pan and held more oil. The pencil on the drive was longer and there was also an added block between the engine casting and oil pump. I don't remember the oil pickup being different? I would have to go the to master parts book to see that number changes as posted, but maybe that could have had something to do with 1940 being the last year of LaSalle? I will find the extra oil pickups and post picture for you.

The smaller one has a 9/16" inlet. The larger one is 3/4" which is the one from my car. The oil pump itself has a matching inlet and took standard gears when rebuilt. The rest of the engine is truly a 1939 LaSalle with correct serial number, head part numbers, bore size, etc. so it would be hard to believe someone just added a "tank" oil pump and strainer.

The parts book does list the 1937-39 strainers with the same p/n and the 1940 with a different one. Interesting. I may have to try to drain seal up the one I have. I'm not too concerned if it sinks again using today's oils and it does stand off from the bottom a bit, even when sunk.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Scott,
Well I found one. We had obtained a later 346 form a guy and sure enough it has the larger pick up and the tank engine on also has the larger pickup. So if you need it you got it.

Excellent Dave! That is the only thing holding up my final build.  I started repairing mine but it has so many leaks I was worried that all the solder would weigh it down  :).  I'll send a PM
Thanks,
Scott
