I am replacing the parcel shelf in my '65 CDV.  A previous owner installed two aftermarket speakers which I am going to remove.  The car has the optional AM/FM radio (mono only).  Am I correct that there would only have been one speaker in the rear?  I'm pretty sure I know the answer but thought I would make sure before I install the insulation on the package shelf and cover up the second hole.

Thanks and Happy Motoring!

One speaker for mono. I don’t believe that the stereo option was a available until 66. Greg Surfas

Greg, correct on both counts.

The factory, single rear speaker on monaural systems is a 6x9 speaker with an impedance of 10 ohms.  The front one is 4x10, also with 10 ohms impedance.

They no longer seemed interested in my AC seminar so this year we are going over the pond to France and the UK. Included in our agenda will  be a visit with two of my cars that now reside there.

Thanks for the confirmation all!

Greg, I don't know about '66, but yup, stereo was not in the option book in '65.

Chris - don't know about Overland Park yet.  I'm not sure the old '65 will be up to a trip of that distance.  Lots left to fix before it will be ready for a road trip.  It will certainly never be a show car.

I hope the aftermarket speakers didn't damage your OEM radio.  They tend to be much lower impedance (usually 4 ohm) and 2 wired in parallel on the rear shelf would be even lower!

Hi Hornet,

Yup, they are 4 ohm speakers.  Haven't bothered to investigate how they are wired, as I don't intend to leave them.  The radio plays but there is lots of static and the tuner knob doesn't do much.  My plan is to have the radio restored to original, with the proper speakers.  If I'm gonna have a 1965 driving experience, the radio is part of it!  But a transmission leak, motor and transmission mounts, tires, rebuild of the door window tracks and mechanisms, and some of the weather stripping not done by the previous owner will come first.
