Hey Clay,
I'm not sure if it's an original piece or not for the '56, but it was in it when I  bought it.
If you look on Ebay for "Cadillac spare tire cover " you'll find a bunch of them. I never thought about what years it's correct for,  I just wanted to know if it was a Cadillac part and it never crossed my mind it's not for this year.
I didn't find any numbers on it. And it didn't have the emblems on it either.  I added that to dress it up a bit.
But it covers the spare tire rim perfectly,  it just contacts the tire, I'm guessing so it doesn't rattle.

Yes, I like the info I'm getting here.  Where else could you get all this?

Yes, it is a great place to share information and tech stuff, even stories. Can't find anything on those spare tire covers so far. The section where I believe they should be noted in the 1956 MPL, does not apparently mention them. The CLC Authenticity Manual does mention the "dog dish" cap for '54 though, (without mentioning a spare tire cover):

"A spare tire is mounted vertically in the right side of the trunk and held in place by a folding arm
with a single nut. A plain metal hubcap was furnished on early 1954 cars, but was discontinued
beginning with engine number 58988, according to the August 1954 Serviceman. Apparently cars
with wire or sabre wheels continued with hubcaps until engine number 40089 in 1955. This from
the March, 1955 Serviceman
." ...for model year 1954.

Difficult to believe that a matter ostensibly so "simple", i.e. what should be in your trunk; could become so involved. A lesson for non-car people as to how difficult it can be to restore a vintage vehicle, and keep it all original. Just getting detailed information on parts is the first hoop to jump through. There is also the matter of original finish and color as well as original hardware requirements (bolts/screws/fasteners/etc) and were they painted or plated? My hat goes off to all who have ventured down this road. Still would recommend you order a copy of this Manual. Keep us posted on your Cadillac beauty. Clay/Lexi

I hadn't heard of this manual until I joined up here.  Where/how would one go about finding a copy of it,  and how much is one?

Rick here is the link to this CLC publication. While it is in need of a serious update, there is still a lot of good information in there. Clay/Lexi

Thanks Clay, I had no idea that such a book even existed until I joined here.
I don't suppose you know when it might get that update do you?

No idea whatsoever. I would work on the presumption that it will not be updated, at least in the foreseeable future. I do not regret purchasing one, I just accept its limitations and use in conjunction with other reference material. Clay

Well my thanks to Clay and all the others here for the information on the correct jack for the 56.
Now that I know I've got the right one,  here's what it looks like now. I'd already soaked it to remove the rust, then I abrasive blasted it to give the paint something to bite on. I dipped it into some GM chassis black paint  to get it into all the little places that you can't spray into, and once that was dry, a couple of coats of low gloss black engine enamel finished it off.

I know what some might be thinkin', "Get a life Clay", but that is one lovely jack. Well done Rick! Us geeks love these happy news follow ups! Clay/Lexi
