For my application, it turns out that I can't use a stock 37 LaSalle transmission.  Someone altered the crossmember to fit a 41 and later transmission.  Interestingly, I happened upon a transmission built from a 37 maincase and a 41 and later tailshaft.  In going through it quickly on pick up, the input shaft spins nicely but the output shaft is quite stiff when turning it.  What usually causes the output shaft to move stiffly?  I will start cleaning up the trans soon, but would like to know what to look for and figure out if I may need to replace anything.

Thank you for your help.

Try loosening the tail shaft housing bolts as a test. If I recall there is one bolt that is shorter than the rest. If that is the case you can test each one to see which one is the culprit.    Harry
