I BOUGHT THIS 1960 CADILLAC FOR PARTS. I HAVE A GUY WHO WANTS TO BUY EVERYTHING I HAVE LEFT OVER IN PARTS FROM IT AND THE REST OF THE BODY. HERE'S THE CATCH... I DONT HAVE THE TITLE. IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET THE TITLE REPLACED. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN. THE REPLACEMENT TITLE WAS ISSUED IN CALIFORNIA. CAN I GET THE TITLE PAPERWORK SENT TO ME FROM THE CALIFORNIA DMV? HOW WOULD SOMEONE GET THE TITLE SENT TO ME IN MICHIGAN? ANYONE EVER BEEN IN THIS SITUATION. THANKS, PAUL

I think only the person who's name (or their estate) could get a replacement from CA.   Do you know who that is?

Typically you would go through the process in your state.   Usually involves a state approved or even state inspection then a bonding process at which point you get a bonded title for a period of time.  The bond is for if someone claims ownership in the bonding period there is some money to make both sides happy.  Kind of a pain for a parts car.

I've actually had pretty good luck getting helpful info from CA DMV. They have a call back system- you leave your number and someone calls back pretty promptly. And if they don't have the answer, they aren't afraid to connect you with someone else.

In CA it is easy if you know what hoops to jump through. If you think it has been a while since it was registered, you just say you lost the title and want a new one.

If the person buying the car is not planning to put it back together and register it, I would just sell it with a bill of sale.

Tell him you're selling it as junk. Use the number on the CHP plate that's screwed to the body if he needs a BOS. . That car is probably off file here in Ca. anyway.

Too much fun is more than you can have.

My experience as an 'out of state' buyer of a California Cadillac was DMV there wanted $900 in fees that presented in Arizona for collection when I unknowingly wanted to transfer title.

The fees were "non use fees" for a decade? Because in that state you cannot just park the car and forget about it (common scenario of old cars) you must go thru the formal 'deregistion'process first.

As an out of state buyer I figured I could plead my case as such. Well, they forced me to pay the $900 😖.

It has been admitted to me a few times when someone really wanted ME to get a title for a parts/junk car that will never see the road again, is so they can take my title and the vin plates from the junk car and transfer them to their same year/make car they don't have a title for. Not only do they get spare parts, but a title and vin plate with no effort involved. I have also seen people take a title and vin plate and list them on eBay under very obscure listing titles so as not to get caught, and ask $300-$500+ for them. I personally don't jump through hoops so every parts car I had no titles for went with a bill of sale only.

Florida also has non-use fees or laws or what not. Little did I know it, and it came up when I finally went to re-register my 57 Cadillac after 8 or so years of lapse. Luckily, the lady behind the counter was kind enough to give me several options that I could sign my name to, swearing the reason why the car sat for so long. I put down that it was in long term storage/repair status, which was not a lie and got me out of that predicament.
