The glove box will not drop freely when I push in the button. I can open it if I open the ash tray and pull the cover forward when pushing in the button. Why does the lid not drop on its own.

I tried adjusting the bar that the key lock hooks on to but no luck. The lock works and retracts when the button is pushed in.

Any thoughts?

The lock cylinder housings are notorious for breaking. But normally they stop latching. Not sure about not releasing.

Try removing the lock and see if it still sticks. Perhaps the hinge needs lubricating?

Sometimes the hinge itself needs adjusting. If the door is on the wrong angle, it can either bind or not latch at all. There are several screws at the bottom of the glove box door.
