Looks like a Stuart?

No matter what, it was a hard landing.
Enjoy life - it has an expiration date.

They must have made the drivers really tough back then.

Yes, Sue, that is an M3A1 Stuart light tank.

It was the M5 Stuart light tank that had the Cadillac engines and Hydramatic transmissions. It can be distinguished from the M3A1 partly by sloping armor plate at the front of the tank.

The M3 in your photo wouldn't have had Cadillac engines. It would most likely have had one Continental W-670 radial aircraft engine, but there is also a chance it had a Guiberson diesel radial engine.

Not a good move, the bottom of a tank has the
least protetion.  Our P47s would bounce 50cals
off the road and into the tank underside.

There's a fully restored Stuart near Spotsylvania, VA that they bring out for certain shows.  Sometimes the choke will stick on the engines so my friend uses an old Louisville Slugger bat to tap the side so it'll idle out.

Tim, Are you thinking about the Nokesville Tank Farm? Here is a picture from their open house in August. I think the operator said this one is a Chaffee. It had two Cadillac engines and wouldn't you know one of them had a stuck choke. They did finally get it running on both engines. It definitely sounded good.     Harry

You're absolutely correct Harry!  My buddy volunteers for that museum and that event.  If you're near the DC area I'd highly recommend you see em perform!

I live less than five miles from there on the same road. There were three volunteers at the tank, one was the operator and two spotters. One seemed to be familiar with the choke problem and finally got it working.     Harry
