Hi,me again. I've just removed the inner speedometer cable from my 58. I was fortunate enough to remove it from under the dash. I removed the cover under the steering column, here I could see the end of the cable threaded to the lower rear of the gage cluster. By removing two heat and defrost ducts and bending down a third one, I could undo the cable and turn it down enough to remove the inner cable.
It appears in n good condition, no worn areas, but some dry tacky areas at the dash end. Tomorrow I plan to decrease lube it well and reinstall.
I'd like to test it with out moving to car, which direction should it turn, can I put the trans end  into a low speed  drill. All of your previous comments have been very helpful.     Ivan

In a word, Yes.   You can remove the end from the Transmission, and then rotate the gear with a battery drill.   But, the drill has to be in reverse rotation.
