I think we all confuse cause and effect on occasions. As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, the location of the fuel pump high up on the engine's oil fill proved to be a design flaw, and FINALLY GM designed engines with the pump toward the bottom of the car... sufficient lubrication for the mechanical "push-pull" pump action, and less exposure to high heat inches away from the hood, as well as less suction needed to pull the gas from the tank, as well as less danger of fire should the pump leak.  Having daily driven a couple of '56's from 1965 through 1975, I replaced several of these mostly on the highway during the summer months where the engine would starve for fuel because of failing pumps.
