AMALIE Motor Oil Popularity and Usage?

GUYS and GALS!  How many of you out there in the world are using or have used "AMALIE" motor oil and what is your opinion of its quality.  Somehow,  if I recollect correctly, I thought it was in the old days connected with the high quality "WOLF'S HEAD" motor oil which was always considered the best around along with 'QUAKER STATE" but was much too expensive for me back quite a few years ago.  I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions.  THANKS!   EAM

JIM!  What happened with your use of Quaker State motor oil.  That use to be the oil to put into our cars if we could afford it. We'd all be interested in hearing about your trouble with it.  Are you sure it was the oil that caused your problem?  That's the first I have heard about Quaker State not doing a good job.  EAM

its well known these days that quaker state is a last resort oil....though im not sure why either, but nobody recommends it these days

ive never used amalie motor oil, but ill look for its msds sheet to see which company actually produces it these days because its likely not made by the same company the old stuff was made by..if the parent company is reputable then i wouldnt see why it wouldnt be good as well.

from what ive read amalie has changed hands a lot.  it looks like its being produced by sun oil company which also distributes xcel brand lubricants.  it has favorable reviews on some lexus sites and a few gm sites as well...probably decent stuff, but ive never used it.

I would be very interested to know what facts you have to give such negative info on Quaker State.  I've used it for over 40 years without problems.  No -- I don't own stock in the company but I'm interested to know what info you have (or anyone else for that matter) that leads you to that recommendation.  Facts, studies or other documented info -- not opinions.

Here we go again.

Growing up I always heard the bad stuff about QS.

Basically, all name brand, good quality oils available today are about the same and don't gum up your engine with wax or whatever.

70 or 80 years ago oils were a lot different and quality likely varied widely from brand to brand. Major or even minor problems with a particular brand of oil in the 1920s or 1930s grew into legends that never died and were repeated ad nauseum as the gospel for decades.

The major brands today are all pretty much the same and I wouldn't be afraid to use any of them in any of my cars - Quaker State included.

i admitted in my own post that i didnt even know the reason it gained that rep.   So, you should have realized that i was stating an opinion that seems highly regarded and probably unfounded.  i don't use quaker state..sorry if i've offended you, by way of your choice in oil.  if you take a sampling of the general public i'm sure you would find this same, possibly uninformed opinion about quaker state products.  Go on using quaker state if its working fine for you!

No. I'm not offended. When I was a kid I heard the same nonsense about QS. Then I heard stuff about Castrol. Some people say Pennzoil is no good. These things are like the stories about cats stealing babies' breath - they're old wives' tales.

even the strangest rumor has its basis in fact I am from Butler PA oil country. Pa crude is high in paraffin so any oil made with it (Quaker State , Pennzoil) was thought to cause sludge in the engine . while this is certainly more due to irregular oil changes this socalled fact was always taken as gospel around here where we have a town called Petrolia where they refine paraffin for commercial use out of Pa. crude.

Mr Henry is correct. The use of Penn based crudes resulted in vast amount of sludge build up in the oil pan. Pulling the pan as was recommended on the 20's, 30's, and 40's cars, and even into the 50's before the advent of the oil filter.

Even in the post spin on filter days, the pan would be 1/4" to 1/2" deep in sediment (read paraffin)when regular usage of Pa. based oils were used.

With today's sophisticated blends, this won't necessarily hold true. Even the cheapest priced oils are now refined and marketed under a house brand name, while being refined from what some know as the oil leaders.

Some people have money to throw away, some just need an oil change. The key is the research into the product you wish to purchase.

I use the 'house brand' of a Fl. based parts outlet. The name of the oil is called Parts Master. It's refined and bottled by Valvoline, in a generic bottle and a $1.75 per quart price discount. Why pay the name brand price for the same product?

I have said this a few times here and I do not want to start up the whole ZDDP thing again, but, the formula for Rotella has changed in the last couple of years because diesel engines are now required to have catalytic converters and ZDDP is tough on catalytic converters.  The CI rated Rotella oils were good as far as ZDDP is concerned but it is no longer available to my knowledge.  The new Rotella oils are rated CJ and are way down on ZDDP.  I use a ZDDP additive or Mobil 1.

I live close to Butler myself.  The "myth" of Pa grade crude causing sludge build-up
in the crankcase due to wax content is an old wive's tale.  It is technically a "paraffinic based crude oil".  However the wax content is removed by a duel process of solvent extraction and chilling leaving an oil with pour points on the same level as any other major certified brand.  I've
been to the refinery (in the 70's), have seen it done and have seen it tested.  The paraffin was further purified and saved to be resold as a valuable by-product in cosmetics, medical products, etc.

I can't speak about what happened in the 20's and into the early 50's, however, what was causing that sludge build-up was very likely not related to the type of oil being used -- they all were relatively "crude" (no pun intended) formulations compared to what has been in use since the 60's and later.  It was likely caused by a combination of (1) poor oil formulations (2) poor crankcase ventilation and (3) lack of proper filtration.
