Thank you.  I've seen this site, but it doesn't provide width.  The usual data resources fail to provide either width or height information. 

It will be appear in the sales catalog and maybe the shop manual or master parts book.  Anybody have this available?

After digging through some back boxes, I find I have the Cadillac Sales Catalog, Shop Manual, Master Chassis Parts Book, Master Body Parts Book and Fisher Body Shop Manual for my car.  None of them provide width or height. 

The only Cadillac piece that I have that gives width information is a Salesman Data Handbook, which provides "Detailed Sopecifications".  Unfortunately, the only one I have is for 1964.

The 1946 data book ( I'm 99% sure the 47 is identical) didn't list the overall width in the back pages with all the specifications- though it had obscure facts such as front and rear "braking ratios"!!. Finally found overall width on p.47 where it listed rear width as 80 3/4 as noted above and front width??? as 78 1/4. Maybe those measurements are made at the fenders??

Hi Mike.

Thanks a lot for the information.  It''s nice to be able to pin that information down to a specific Cadillac document.  Interesting that the rear is slightly wider than the front - sort of like love handles.  I'll presume these numbers are taken across the fender spears.

Now, another bit of a puzzle.  Both Bob LeCoque and I were examining the car yesterday, and were unable to find where the chassis number was stamped on the chassis.  We were looking down in the engine compartment on the left side (as you sit in the drivers seat) at the top rail of the frame in the area between the front motor mount and the steering box.  I eventually cleaned off the area from in front of the motor mount all the way back to the brake master cylinder down to bare metal (on the top of the frame rail), and absolutely no sign of a chassis number.

Where is it? 

Is it down low on the frame side rail, behind the front wheel?  Or is it on the right side frame rail?

When I had a 47-61, it turned up on the pass side rail-across from the steering box.

Mike is correct on location. Look on top of right frame rail about 2 inches back of right front motor mount. Picture below should show you the location. When you have found the serial number then look behind the top of the water pump on an extended part of the engine block. There you will find the engine number which if you are lucky will be the same number as the serial number on the frame. If different then someplace in the cars history the engine has been changed. Nice looking 47. What is the history?

The title agrees with the engine number.  As you say, I'm quite interested in seeing if the chassis number matches.  The engine compartement looks very original, the head bolts are crisp like they have never been touched, it has the correct original fan belts, quite frayed.  Reportedly the car was sold new in Seattle, eventually passing to a gentleman named Mark Howard, somewhere in the Seattle/Bellingham area.  I think he did the repaint and rechroming,  which was very well done and is holding up just fine.  On his death, the car passed to his sons, then 4 years ago, to a Dave Nelson in Arlinton WA, from whom I bought the car on Tuesday.  The seat cushions have been reupholsted in a not inappropriate cloth, probably what was a good job at the time.  They are fine for now.  Bob LeCoque and I examined the car closely yesterday.  Other than the work described, it seems a remarkably original car, no rust at all, just the way you want it.

I formerly had a 48-7533X.  Bob LeCoque (Sr.), Ted Barber and I are responsible for forming the Pacific Northwest Region decades ago.  I was a national CLC Board Member in the early eighties, the year the Grand National was at Newport, RI.

Is there supposed to be an engine serial # tag srewed or riveted somewhere along the driver's side door jam???  I only ask because I didn't see one on a 46 coupe I came across a few weeks ago.

There should be about a 3 by 2 inch aluminum body plate riveted to the left outside cowl behind the left hood hinge. The tag identifies the year, style, body number, interior trim number as well as paint number. I am not aware of any tag screwed or riveted on the drivers side door jamb.

Thanks for your response. I am aware of that specific plate. I was asking about the engine serial # tag.  My 52 and 59 both have the plastic engine serial tag mounted along the driver's side door jam.  The 46 I looked at didn't have the engine tag and was wondering if that was correct or if it was removed during paiting.

The chassis number was right where you said, on the right frame.  It was very lightly stamped, with the third and forth digits almost on top of each other, and the welder had dragged an arc across the second digit.  That leads me to believe that the number was stamped on the outer frame rail before welding to the inner frame rail.

The frame number agrees with the engine number (and the title number) so all is right with the world.

Domer, there's no tag, plastic or otherwise, on the door jamb of this vintage car.
