Has anyone any experience putting an alternator ( the kind that comes in a generator shell )  on a 346 engine ?

There are  two companies in this country making them and a club member has one on his 41. He says if functions well. I have often thought about buying one but have not yet taken the plunge as they are not cheap and most of my cars are running with 'Becker Electrics' alternators.
As Mr Becker Snr is now deceased they are no more when I need a replacement I will have to consider the Powergen.

Google a "Genernator"

I recently installed one in a 1960 and it works perfectly. It eliminates the external regulator too but it costs $900.00

I got it from Don's Electrical

i have used PowerGen 6v and 12v alternators that look 99% like the stock generators (the casing has a very, very slightly different cosmetic appearance, but you have to know about it and be looking for it to notice).  They mount right up with the stock brackets on 49 and up engines and work fantastic.  I don't know anything about flatheads, however...

Here is a picture of one mounted on a 49.

BTW, these cost about $450
